Alloy Steel AISI 4340 has about 0.40% carbon, 0.7% manganese, 0.2% silicon, 1.8% nickel, 0.8% chromium, and 0.25% molybdenum. The alloy obtains tensile strength of 930 to 1,250 MPa upon quenching and tempering, yield strength of about 800 MPa, and very good impact toughness. The alloy is highly responsive to heat treatment with high hardenability and deep core strength. AISI 4340 has high fatigue strength and maintains toughness even at sub-zero temperatures.
